History and Process

Stained glass artwork has been around for a long time! Colored glass has been made since the ancient times, both the Egyptians and the Romans made small colored glass items like cups and vases. During the middle ages is when stained glass really peaked in popularity, using it to illustrate the stories of the bible because most of population could not read. Its continued to show up in churches and then in homes.

Although there are a few techniques of how to make stained glass my work always starts with a pattern. Usually the pattern is drawn or taken from a picture. That picture is then broken into many pieces which are numbered and cut up. Then I trace each piece onto the desired color glass. After tracing I score the glass with a special tool and try to break it as close to the pattern piece. Then each individual piece of glass is ground to fit like a puzzle and put back together. After it all fits perfectly the glass is cleaned and foiled. After foiling it's arranged again and taped then I solder the whole piece together! It's a lot of steps but the end product is one of a kind. No piece will ever be exactly the same even if I use the pattern again. You can find time lapse videos of the process on my instagram page. ❤️
